If you’ve just bought a new laptop or computer monitor, chances are you’re ready to go through the basics – plug in power, turn it on and go through the setup process, simple things. However, if you want to get the most out of your new display, you often have to set the refresh rate manually.
I am writing this to possibly save you a headache at some point. In my own experience these days sometimes when you get a new screen, be it a new laptop or monitor, the display is factory set to 60Hz, which means the screen refreshes 60 times per second – but sometimes it is the displays are designed for it surpass The.
If this is the case for you, here’s how to change the refresh rate and get it to the ideal mode.
How to improve the refresh rate of your display
If you are a Windows user, follow these steps:
- When your new monitor is connected, press the button Windows key and give ‘display settings‘. Click on the section with the appropriate label and you will be redirected Display Settings Menu

If you’re a Mac user, things are pretty much the same – however, there are two ways to present this on your computer.
First way:
- Click on that apple icon in the upper-left corner of the computer, and then click system settings (or system settings)

- Then click on the drop down menu next to refresh rate to make your selection.
What is the best refresh rate?
This is a difficult question to answer as refresh rates tend to improve as the price of the display increases. When it comes to refresh rate, it comes down to how smooth you want your display to look. A higher refresh rate results in smoother movement on your screen as the screen refreshes multiple times per second. However, this is not the only important feature of a monitor, and there are other factors to consider before making a purchase, such as size and panel type.
Is a refresh rate of 60 Hz sufficient?
For casual use, 60Hz is a perfectly fine refresh rate, but if you want a smoother experience or are looking for a gaming display then it might be worth buying a display that can beat 60Hz. If you want to play, just make sure your system is powerful enough to run games at higher refresh rates. However, if you only plan on gaming occasionally, you should be fine with any refresh rate.
