LG may have decided to capitalize on Panasonic’s 4680 battery production woes and develop its own version more quickly by creating a dedicated team of 200 people known internally as the New Form Factor Task Force. While the taller and wider form factor may be new to LG, Tesla already makes such batteries for use in the Model Y at its Fremont factory.
However, the production volume is rather small and will not be nearly enough to cover the 1.8 million pre-orders for the Cybertruck. As such, Tesla is exploring all possible options to increase its 4680 battery stock. The company recently announced a huge expansion of its Giga Nevada battery factory, as well as new facilities for Giga Texas and Fremont, not to mention that it has now entered the lithium refining business with the construction of a factory on the Gulf Coast.
LG says it could potentially overtake Panasonic in mass-producing 4680 batteries. Given that Panasonic recently pushed back its production date to September 2024, LG could see an opportunity to deliver on that promise.
Apparently, LG’s New Form Factor Task Force team would not only be responsible for developing the 4680 battery, but will also be working on even larger 4695 cells. It’s the same strategy Samsung is using to win customers from electric vehicle manufacturers, so Tesla could soon find unexpected help for its 4680 battery shipments from Korea.
LG is so adamant about developing its own 4680 and 4695 battery cells as soon as possible that it has reportedly “Bringing in winding machines from Koem and Zhejiang Hangke to reverse engineer them“, says the industry report.
