Rumors of iOS 17 keep us all in suspense; It’s exciting to think about which gossip rag might be true. Thankfully, we won’t have to wait much longer for news from Apple. At the annual WWDC 2023 conference in June, we should have a clearer picture of what iOS 17 will look like.
A new iOS is released every year to update that best iPhones and keep everything up to date, not every iOS brings big changes. The iOS 17 update probably won’t be as massive as the iOS 16 update, but there are still plenty of new features to look forward to.
Here’s everything we know so far about iOS 17, from the rumored release date to new features and supported devices.
Release date of iOS 17
You may be wondering, “When is iOS 17 coming?” Historically, Apple releases iOS updates to the public in mid-September. The iOS 16 update was publicly released on September 12, 2022 and the iOS 15 update on September 20, 2021. In fact, the last iOS update that wasn’t released in September was the iOS 5 update in 2011 – it was released in October instead. So, it is safe to assume that the iOS 17 update will be released to the public in mid-September 2023.

We can expect more definitive details and a demonstration of iOS 17 from Apple at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2023 keynote event. The event, hosted by Apple, will run from June 5-9, 2023 and will be announced by Apple new information about iPadOS 17macOS, watchOS, tvOS and of course iOS 17.
Between the official announcement of iOS 17 in June and the public launch in September, there will be a series of developer and public betas for testing purposes. Based on previous iOS updates, the first public beta is expected to take place in July 2023, around a month after the first expected developer beta.
iOS 17 likely supports devices
Until the WWDC event in June, we can’t know for sure which devices will support iOS 17 or which devices will get the update first, but we have some good guesses. Currently, we expect these devices to receive the iOS 17 update:
- iPhone 15 series (at release)
- iPhone 14 series
- iPhone 13 series
- iPhone 12 series
- ‘ iPhone 11
- iPhone XS/XS Max
- iPhone XR
- iPhone SE (2020)
- iPhone SE (2022)

unfortunately, iOS 17 may end support for some iPhones and iPads. Last year iPhone 7 didn’t get iOS 16 update, so it’s safe to assume that iPhone 8 won’t get iOS 17 update among other devices as well. Here are all the devices that are not currently expected to receive the iOS 17 update:
- iPhone X
- iPhone 8
- iPhone 8Plus
- iPad Pro 9.7 (Gen 1)
- iPad Pro 12.9 (Gen 1)
- iPad (Gen 5)
iOS 17 UI theme
There are mixed rumors as to whether the iOS 17 update will bring UI changes and additional customization options. Some say iOS 17 UI design will look almost identical to iOS 16, others expect radical UI changes or at least a redesigned Control Center. If we’re lucky, the rumored radical UI changes will be true.

iPhone users have long awaited the customization possibilities that Android devices offer, and with each iOS update, Apple has come closer to fulfilling these desires, but has not yet reached the goal. The iOS 17 update could reportedly include custom categories and other organization features for your iPhone’s app library, as well as more lock screen customization options.
iOS 17 app updates
There are rumors that several Apple apps will be improved in iOS 17, including Apple Music, Health and Apple Wallet.
The Apple Music app is set to get a simplified interface with better navigation, as will the Home, Fitness, Find My, and Apple Pay apps. It’s also possible that Apple Music’s lyrics can be displayed directly on the lock screen, but this is a lesser confirmed rumor. The health app may show users tables, colored charts, and other visual aids that present their health data in new ways.
Perhaps the most exciting updates are coming to Apple Wallet. In leaks of iOS 17, the The Wallet app appears to have a new look that’s easier to navigate. There’s reportedly a new navigation bar at the bottom of the screen that lets you quickly switch between cards, cash, ID, keys and orders. Then hopefully users will have a separate tab for Apple Cash and Savings.

Apple is developing a new journaling app that will help users track their daily activities, thoughts, and moods. You can connect yours apple watch to pull data for a better overall picture and to log images, locations and exercises throughout the day. The app analyzes user behavior to provide insights into your mental well-being and to help you better understand how much time you spend at home or if something is wrong on a given day.
iOS 17 app stores and third-party sideloading
iOS 17 could spell the end of Apple’s App Store walled gardenthanks to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, which came into force on November 1, 2022. This law dictates that all smartphones must be charged via USB-C as the new standard and all companies must open their platforms and services to third-party developers.

Put simply, this means that iPhone users may see more third-party app stores popping up and have the ability to download apps directly from developers’ websites. Developers could potentially take home more money, and iPhone users have a wider range of apps to choose from. It’s a win-win situation!
European legislation requires companies to allow sideloading and third-party app stores by 2024. Therefore, it is likely that these two new features will be supported in iOS 17. Unfortunately, it’s unclear if all iPhone users will see these benefits right away. Since the law was only passed in the EU, there’s a chance Apple could make these changes exclusively in Europe.
While it would be great if Apple would willingly allow sideloading and third-party app stores around the world, that probably won’t happen — at least not right away. Borrowing from the EU, other countries could enact similar laws, forcing Apple to expand the feature to other countries.
More rumored features of iOS 17
When Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman first spoke about iOS 17, he said that Apple is prioritizing iOS 17 features less and focusing more on its new VR/AR headset and accompanying xrOS software. The original iOS 17 update was intended to include fewer major changes, but as development progressed, more “nice to have” features were added.
There probably will be AR/VR headset integration with iOS 17, but that’s clearly not the only feature Apple has prioritized when developing its software update. Aside from the major changes like user interface customization, third-party app support, and updates to popular Apple apps, iOS 17 will bring some minor – but nonetheless extremely useful – changes.
iPhones may have better flashlight controls with a brightness slider instead of the three preset levels in iOS 16. Then there will be minor updates to the camera app and Apple CarPlay. Users should also see improvements to the iPhone’s system-wide search and spotlight features, although it’s unclear exactly what those improvements will be.
iOS 17, what we’d like to see
There were many great features in iOS 16, apart from the difficult period at the beginning of the release, where there were countless bugs and glitches. However, there are some gaps that iOS 16 never seems to fill. Hopefully iOS 17 can pick up where iOS 16 left off and live up to the rumors that excite us the most.

iPhones currently have home screen widgets, but these are not interactive. Widgets you can interact with eliminate the need to fully open apps. Instead, you can tick an item off your to-do list, reply to a quick email, or edit notes—all from your home screen. iOS 17 is said to be calling these active widgets, and they’ll bring “one-tap buttons, sliders, and more that make widgets dynamic.”
If there’s one thing iPhone users always want, it’s more customization options. We hope to see more customizable options in general in iOS 17, from accessibility mode and app library organization to the home screen and control center. If any of these customization rumors come true, we’d be happy.
Apple is reportedly improving Dynamic Island so it “can do a lot more,” but the company is vague about what that might entail. At the moment you can see system warnings, e.g. B. when the battery is low or when you AirPods connect; You can also use it to track live activities. However, it would be nice to see more convenience features, including real-time notifications that deliver weather updates, or better on-screen Siri UI integration.
Dynamic Island has the potential to be an extremely useful tool, but a lot still needs to be done to turn it into what iPhone users both want and need.
Improved notifications have been a big request from iPhone users for years, but Apple doesn’t deliver with every iOS update. We hope that the iOS 17 update will finally bring relief to notifications. Common requests from iPhone users regarding notifications include grouping by similarity, an easy option to clear all notifications, and support for quick replies or better quick actions for notifications.
Android users have all of these notification features—and more. It’s time for Apple to catch up.
Siri was the first virtual assistant to reach a wide audience. Although Apple has had years to improve Siri and its responses to iPhone users, the company simply hasn’t done so. Of course, you can ask Siri to perform simple commands and answer basic questions, but Apple’s virtual assistant doesn’t come close to the capabilities of Google Assistant or even Amazon Alexa.
If Apple’s voice assistant doesn’t improve with iOS 17, you can always do it Replace Siri with ChatGPT to get better answers from your iPhone.
